Sunnybrook in Toronto looks to enhance the patient experience with PatientWay self-service kiosks
OTTAWA and TORONTO, April 19, 2011 – Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has entered into an agreement with PatientWay to introduce self-service kiosks across the hospital. The touchscreen kiosks will feature PatientWay’s Wayfinding solution, which will make it easy for visitor’s to navigate through the hospital.
“We are excited to be working with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. As a recognized leader in patient care, it’s an ideal site for showcasing PatientWay technology and expertise in hospital process improvement”, says PatientWay CEO, Jay Lawrence. “Our Kiosks will help Sunnybrook to further position itself as the premier centre of excellence for patient care in Canada.”
With the PatientWay Kiosk Wayfinding solution, patients will be able to navigate through a list of pre-determined destinations, while having the route displayed on the touchscreen in real time. Kiosks will be displayed at different stations around the hospital and patients will have the ability to view their route at any of these stations. In addition, directions to services outside of the hospital such as parking and restaurants will also be available.
Sarina Cheng, Director Health Data Resources & Information and Telecommunication Services at Sunnybrook, comments “Today, Consumers are accustomed to online access as a convenient way to look up information when completing day to day tasks. The trend towards self service options in health care is on the rise. With Patient Way’s self service technology and kiosks for wayfinding, self check in and self registration Sunnybrook will enhance and continue to support the patient and visitor experience to provide the best possible service and satisfaction when visiting our hospital”.
PatientWay Kiosks, which have been installed in several Ontario hospitals to deliver services from patient self check-in to satisfaction surveys, will be installed at Sunnybrook this Fall, making wayfinding maps available to its visitors as a starter. A key feature of the product is that Sunnybrook will be able to easily change their wayfinding routes on their own when necessary.

Our 10,000 staff, physicians and volunteers provide the best care for critical times in the lives of the 1 million patients we see each year. Over the past 60 years, we have evolved from our original role as a veterans’ hospital into a centre of excellence in patient care, education and research.
Today, we specialize in caring for Canada’s war veterans, high risk pregnancies, critically-ill newborns, adults and the elderly, and treating and preventing cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, orthopaedic and arthritic conditions and traumatic injuries. We are fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and provide learning opportunities for more than 2,000 students annually. Sunnybrook is also a research intensive hospital. Each year, our more than 600 scientists conduct $100 million in breakthrough research. Our commitment to excellence has resulted in an international reputation & a vital role in the Ontario health care system. We offer highly specialized services unavailable in other communities.
PatientWay’s parent company, Infonium Inc. was founded in 2000 to provide professional services to government and healthcare clients across Canada. The results of this deep experience working with the healthcare sector and developing software applications inspired the creation of PatientWay.
The workload of hospitals and other healthcare organizations is increasing from an aging population and increased utilization. Economic realities are forcing providers to do more with the same. Meanwhile, today’s patients expect to receive the same level of convenience (shorter lineups and choice of self or full service) that they are used to receiving from other industries (banking, travel, shopping, etc). The PatientWay Suite and process improvement services address this problem by bringing measurable cost and time savings to hospitals while increasing staff and patient satisfaction by introducing self-service technologies. We streamline patient access through web, kiosk and mobile apps. By making the patient a more active participant in the delivery of their care, hospitals will quickly realize time and cost savings and increased staff and patient satisfaction.
